Welcome to your Mickey's Boys of Boyne Website!
Competition Rules
We will be playing 4 competitive games while in Boyne. The first 2 days are to establish handicap and earn bragging rights and learn to laugh at ourselves … just in case we thought our games got better over the winter. The next two games make up the Ryder Cup competition. We play for $5.00 US per round. Please collect from your team and give to Norm. Please get your score cards for each of the first two rounds to Norm immediately after the round so that they can be recorded to calculate/update handicaps. Record your real score for each hole. If you don’t complete a hole, no worries, you get a double bogey.
Cheers!
Sunday Van Competition (Aka Sphincter Ball) - wager $5.00 US per person
Play: Each person will play their own ball on each hole and keep score individually. Play the BLUE TEES (Heather) for all holes.
Scoring: This is a team game for the total pot of money, winner take all. Your foursome is playing against the other foursomes. The scoring will be based on the total of the best two net scores of your foursome on each hole, except on the Sphincter Holes. On the Sphincter Holes which are holes 2, 9 and 16, your group will have to choose the ONE player whose score will count on the designated Sphincter hole. Only that resulting net score, of the player using the Sphincter Ball, will count towards the team score for that hole. Each player must record their own natural score as well for handicap purposes. On the next Sphincter hole, a different player must be chosen and so on, until all three Sphincter Holes have been completed. This means that you must use three different people scores on the Sphincter Holes. You get to use your full handicap to determine your net score i.e. if you have a 20 handicap you get 2 shots on the two hardest handicap holes and 1 shot on the rest. Please place an asterisk in the score box of the one player designated to count for the Sphincter Holes. Below you will see an example scorecard. I have dots to indicate any strokes a player receives on that hole, note that Player D gets two strokes on four holes. Circled scores indicate scores that are used to calculate total team score i.e. on Hole#4, Player B was designated to play the sphincter ball and he got a 6 net 5 which is the team score on that hole even though, Player A had a 4 and on Hole#9, the players net scores were 3, 4, 4, 4 so their team score was 7 since two scores must count. After all the team scores are added, this team scored 141. Hand in your score card to Norm Sunday evening.
Monday Morning Round (aka 40 Balls) – wager $5US per person
40 balls is the name of this competition where your team is comprised of the foursome you are playing with. After completing each hole and before teeing off on the next hole, your team must decide how many scores from the previous hole will count toward the 40 scores needed to complete the game. The team’s net score in relation to par is used for scoring, but keep mark the actual players score down for handicap purposes. You will see on the example below that on Hole#1, the net scores from Player A to D are 3,3,4,6 and the team decided to choose three scores by circling them on the scorecard before teeing off on #2. They used 3 scores and the net is -2 (2 under par). This is done until all 40 scores are used. This team ended with a score of -12. Hand in the score card to Norm after the round.
Tuesday/Wednesday Morning Rounds Ryder Cup (wager $10 per person)
The teams are pre-assigned, based on last year’s teams with a few changes to accommodate new players and the pairings are decided the evening before by the team captains. The handicaps used will be a result of your first two rounds and your last year’s handicap. The calculation, as customary, involves taking the better of the two scores and applying a 90% factor before averaging it with last year’s handicap which is an accumulation of the previous year’s play. Each match is worth 1 point with ½ point each for tied matches.
Winning team captain from the previous year will start the proceedings on Monday night by announcing his first pairing. The other team captain will then announce his matching pairing and the pairing for the second match and so on until done. The reverse will occur on Tuesday night.
Round 1: Played on Tuesday morning, this match is a two person better ball where each person plays their own ball and the best net score will be matched against your opposition until the match is won or lost. Any handicap strokes are awarded with the lowest handicap player being 0 and the other players will receive the difference in their handicap compared to the low man i.e. Player A is 10, Player B is 12, Player C is 12 and Player D is 20, Player A plays to ), Players B&C are 2 and Player D is 10. Remember that this is match play; you do not have to keep playing a hole if you are out of it, and you can simply concede the hole and go to the next tee. Hole scores or total score is meaningless as each hole represents an individual point with 18 possible points available. Each match won is 1 point and a tie is 0 points. The example scorecard below shows where handicap strokes apply with an asterisk and that Team C&D win 3 up with 2 to play. They get 1 ryder cup point and Team A&B gets 0 points.
Round 2: Second round of Ryder Cup will be on Wednesday morning in a two person scramble medal play format. This means that your team’s total score for 18 holes will be compared to your opponent’s total score. Play putts into the hole. No handicaps will be used for this match. You must complete each hole of play and record your score for that hole, since there are no conceded putts and you must complete all 18 holes, unlike the match play competition. Each match is worth 1 point with ½ point to each team in a tie.
